Queensland – Mar 2022 – Nyngan
After a single night at Emmdale Roadhouse we were on our way once more.
There is still little to report between towns out here, so our next pit stop was Cobar, home to the Big Beer Can and a centre for mining (lot’s of those out this way). We used Cobar for a break but didn’t investigate the area. This trip is first and foremost about the conference we are attending on the Gold Coast, so sightseeing is on the back burner. Hopefully we’ll get back through these parts at a more leisurely pace some day.
From Cobar we headed to our overnight stop at Nyngan. Here we chose a freecamp at Nyngan Weir on the Bogan river. There were a few other vans there when we arrived, so we decided to hunt for a decent spot. BEWARE if you have a large van. There is a track leading off the main camping area that turns out is just a loop with no additional camping spots, but it is narrow and has a number of large, low, overhanging branches that require navigating around. I had to get out of the car and direct Megan through. It must have taken 30 minutes to travel the 60 metres of this track. Eventually we got through and found a spot near everyone else.
Once set up, the camping area proved to be a very nice spot to stop. There are toilet facilities here too.
The following morning we set off once more, passing through Nyngan proper to ensure we visited the local Big Thing, the Big Bogan.
Onwards…

Hi Darren,
I have the same problem you had with the spare wheel for a Touareg, I loved your solution.
I have a 2015 Touareg and I want to do the same.
How deep is your mounting bracket that the van company provided, ie from the bumper to the wheel mounting plate, a lot of the default wheel carriers I have found are not deep enough for the Touareg wheel ?
Cheers
Ian
Hi Ian,
Sorry for the slow reply, I don’t get many comments on here so do not check frequently.
I don’t know the depth of the carrier, but I know it isn’t deep enough for the Treg wheel. I have added a couple of spacers between the carrier and the Treg wheel cut from old plastic cutting boards. As I don’t weld, the bolts have a nut holding them to the carrier and the boards also cover those, keeping their hard steel away from the softer aluminium of the wheel. I made sure the bolts I ordered were long enough to pass through this extra depth.
I hope that helps.
