After our successful first attempt free camping at Point Sturt, we decided to have another go. We chose Rapid Bay campground this time around, and boy, didn’t the weekend start off interestingly!

As seems to be our norm – so far at least – we were somewhat later getting away than we had planned. Let’s just say we have yet to perfect our packing process. This meant an arrival after dark. That in itself wasn’t so bad, but the weather was another thing altogether. Sunny skies were forecast for the weekend, but Friday night proved to be very, very wet. So wet in fact that we crawled along the road at times, well below the posted speed limits, due to poor visibility. Then, when we arrived we simply pulled up in what looked like a vacant spot and settled in for the night. The caretaker eventually turned up for our camping fee, and told us we were fine where we were. All good.

Saturday

Saturday morning was indeed sunny, and so was the remainder of the weekend. We immediately decided to move from our overnight spot to one with more grass coverage. The water was still a little cool for swimming, but walking along the beach and down the jetty was good and relaxing. Sadly, Megan had to work much of the morning, but that is the point of the caravan… for us to be able to work while we travel. Meanwhile, Jack Jack and I explored.

For lunch we headed to the nearby town of Normanville, just to get out and explore the area a little. On our way there we saw some paragliders sailing from the cliffs above the coastal road, but unfortunately failed to get any photos or video. We looked again on our way back to camp, but they had packed up for the day.

We spent the afternoon and evening exploring the beach and jetty and relaxing by the van. There isn’t much more to be said. Rapid Bay is a sit and relax kind of place.

Sunday

There isn’t much to be said for Sunday. It was another glorious sunny day, and so we had a relaxing morning before packing up and heading home. All in all, I think we might be back again, and next time, with a little more experience under our belts, we might explore a bit more, and perhaps even swim if the weather is warm enough.
